What is New Year's Eve in Marrakech actually like?
New Year's Eve in Marrakech is a busy, sociable night, but the celebrating happens behind doors rather than in the street. Most Moroccans are Muslim and the Gregorian new year is not a religious festival, so there is no city-run countdown of the kind you find in London, New York or Sydney. Visitors and many Moroccans mark the night at a dinner: in a riad, a hotel, a restaurant or on a rooftop terrace.
Jemaa el-Fna, the main square of the medina, is crowded on 31 December, as it is on most evenings in the holiday week. The food stalls, musicians and storytellers work as usual until late. It is a good place to walk through after dinner, but there is no official countdown or stage there that we can confirm, so treat any extra music as a bonus rather than a plan.
Fireworks are the most common question. We know of no official city-wide fireworks display in Marrakech on New Year's Eve. Some large hotels have included fireworks in their own gala nights in past years, so if fireworks matter to you, ask the venue directly before you book. Alcohol is served only in licensed hotels, restaurants and bars. Drinking in the street or in a public place is illegal, and the UK government advice says it can lead to arrest.

What is the weather on 31 December, and what should you wear?
Expect a sunny, mild day and a cold night. Late December afternoons in Marrakech usually reach 18 to 21°C, but the sun sets at about 5.30 pm and night lows are typically 5 to 8°C, colder on a clear, still night. Morocco has used GMT all year since 20 September 2026, so it gets dark an hour earlier on the clock than in past winters.
| Where you are at midnight | Afternoon high | Night low | What to wear |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marrakech (riad, restaurant, hotel) | 18 to 21°C | 5 to 8°C | Smart layers and a warm jacket, especially on a rooftop or in an open courtyard |
| Agafay Desert camp | Similar to Marrakech | Often colder than the city | A down jacket, hat and closed shoes. Most of the evening is outdoors |
| Sahara camp at Merzouga | 15 to 19°C | About 0 to 4°C, frost possible | Thermal layers, a down jacket, hat, gloves and a scarf |
| Essaouira | 18 to 20°C | 9 to 13°C | A windproof layer. The mildest night of these options |
Approximate long-term December averages for the nearest weather stations, rounded into ranges. Any single night can be colder.
Riads are built to stay cool, and an open courtyard or rooftop is cold by 10 pm. Dress smartly if you like, but bring a warm layer to wear over it, and closed shoes rather than heels for cobbled medina lanes. Our guide to what to wear in Morocco covers covering up in the medina and a full winter packing list.
Where can you celebrate New Year's Eve in Marrakech?
You have seven realistic options, from a quiet dinner in your riad to a night in the dunes. Event prices change every year and vary by venue, so the table describes cost in broad terms. Always ask for the full price per person and what drinks are included.
| Option | What it is like | Who it suits | When to book | Rough cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Riad dinner | A set dinner for guests in the courtyard or on the roof, sometimes with musicians. Calm and personal | Couples, families, anyone who wants to walk to bed | When you book the room. Ask if a dinner is planned | Usually the lowest. Sometimes added as a supplement to the room |
| Hotel gala dinner | A long set menu with live music or a DJ in a large hotel, often in Hivernage or the Palmeraie | Groups and anyone who wants a dressed-up party with dancing | By September or October for the best-known hotels | Usually the highest of the city options |
| Restaurant | A fixed New Year menu, often with entertainment, in the medina, Gueliz or Hivernage | Travellers staying in a riad without its own dinner | Several weeks ahead. Popular places fill early | Mid to high. Set menus cost more than on a normal night |
| Rooftop terrace | Dinner or drinks above the medina. The view is the draw, but it is cold after dark | Those happy to wrap up for the view | Several weeks ahead. Ask about heaters and cover | Mid to high |
| Agafay Desert camp evening | Dinner, music and a fire at a camp in the stony desert about 40 km from the city, under an hour by road | Those who want a desert feel without the long drive | Early autumn. Arrange the late return transfer or stay the night | Mid to high, plus transport |
| Sahara camp at Merzouga | Dinner and drums around a fire in the Erg Chebbi dunes, with the first sunrise of the year over the sand | Couples, friends and families with at least 3 days | As early as possible. Camps fill months ahead | Part of a multi-day private tour. See below |
| Quiet night in Essaouira | A small walled port on the Atlantic, about 178 km from Marrakech, with mild nights and a slower pace | Travellers who would rather skip the party | A few weeks ahead for a riad | Usually lower than Marrakech |
Descriptions are general. What each venue offers on the night, and whether it serves alcohol, varies by year and should be checked with the venue.
For the Agafay Desert, our private day trips from Marrakech include an Agafay evening, priced per group on request.
When should you book for New Year in Marrakech?
Book as early as you can, ideally by late summer or early autumn. The days between Christmas and New Year are among the busiest of the year in Marrakech and the desert camps, and riads, flights and the best-known dinners all rise in price and fill up.
- Flights first. Holiday fares into Marrakech usually rise as the dates get closer, so fix these before anything else.
- Then the riad or hotel. Some hotels set a minimum stay over New Year, and some add a compulsory gala dinner charge for anyone staying on 31 December. Check the booking terms before you pay.
- Then the dinner. If your riad or hotel does not hold its own dinner, reserve a restaurant table early and ask for the menu and price in writing.
- Then the desert. If you want New Year in the Sahara, ask for the camp before you book Marrakech nights, because the camp is the hardest part to secure.
Our tour prices are the same all year, holidays included: €500 to €800 per person for a 3-day private desert tour and €600 to €900 for 4 days. What changes at New Year is availability, not our price. The full table is on the Morocco tour cost page.
How does New Year's Eve in the Sahara work?
You time a private desert tour so that its camp night falls on 31 December. Hassan and his team in Marrakech run New Year tours to the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga, and it is the most requested alternative to a night in the city. You ride a camel into the dunes before sunset, eat dinner at camp and spend the evening around a fire, usually with drums and music, then wake for the first sunrise of the year over the sand.
On both our published routes from Marrakech, the camp is the second night. That means starting on 30 December.
- [3-day Marrakech to Merzouga](/tours/3-day-marrakech-to-merzouga-desert-tour/): 30 December over the Tizi n'Tichka pass to the Dades Gorges. 31 December to Merzouga and the camp. 1 January back to Marrakech by Nkob and Ouarzazate, about 553 km. The shortest option, but a very long drive after a late night.
- [4-day Marrakech to Merzouga](/tours/4-day-marrakech-to-merzouga-desert-tour/): the same first two days, then a hotel night in Ouarzazate on 1 January and an easier drive back to Marrakech on 2 January. This is the better choice for most people at New Year.
Two things to know before you choose. First, desert nights at New Year are close to freezing. Camps provide heavy blankets, but a standard tent is not heated like a hotel room, so ask what heating your camp has, or look at a luxury desert camp. Second, snow can close the Tizi n'Tichka pass for hours in winter, so avoid tight flight connections. What happens on the night varies by camp, and your quote confirms the camp, the dinner and what is included. See all our desert tours for longer routes.

What is open in Marrakech on 1 January?
1 January is a public holiday in Morocco, so banks, post offices and government offices close. In 2027 it falls on a Friday. Restaurants, cafés and most of the souks usually open, though often late in the morning. Monument and museum hours can change on holidays, so ask your riad. 31 December itself is a normal working day.
Two more January dates matter if you stay on. 11 January, the anniversary of the Proclamation of Independence, and 14 January, the Amazigh New Year called Yennayer, are also public holidays. Yennayer has been an official paid holiday since a royal decision in 2023. Offices and banks close, while tours run as normal. Petit taxis run on 1 January, but expect fewer of them in the early hours after midnight.
How do you stay safe on New Year's Eve in Marrakech?
Marrakech is generally safe on New Year's Eve, and the main risks are the ordinary ones of any crowded night out. The UK government notes that pickpocketing and bag-snatching are common in tourist areas, especially in the medinas. Jemaa el-Fna is at its most crowded late in the evening.
- Keep valuables close. Use a zipped bag worn in front and leave passports in the room safe.
- Plan the ride home before you go out. Taxis can be hard to find after midnight. Ask your riad or restaurant to arrange a car, or agree a return time with your driver.
- Agree the taxi fare or check the meter. Do this before you set off, every time.
- Stay on lit, busy routes in the medina. Quiet side alleys are confusing after midnight. Save your riad's location offline.
- Drink only in licensed venues, and keep emergency numbers saved: police 19 (190 from a mobile in cities) and ambulance 15.

A 7-day New Year itinerary: Marrakech and the desert
This plan puts you in the dunes on 31 December, using our 4-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour in the middle. It loops back to Marrakech, so you fly in and out of one airport.
- 28 December: arrive in Marrakech. Airport pickup and an evening walk to Jemaa el-Fna.
- 29 December: Marrakech. The souks, a palace and gardens by day, dinner in the medina.
- 30 December: over the High Atlas. Your private driver collects you for the drive over the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades Valley.
- 31 December: New Year's Eve in the Sahara. Todra Gorge, then Merzouga, a camel ride at sunset and the night at camp.
- 1 January: sunrise over the dunes. Then a drive by Rissani and the Draa Valley to a hotel in Ouarzazate.
- 2 January: back to Marrakech. A shorter road day by Ait Ben Haddou and Telouet. Evening in the city.
- 3 January: departure. Airport drop-off.
To make it 6 days, swap in the 3-day tour and fly home on 2 January. The tour part costs €600 to €900 per person for 4 days or €500 to €800 for 3 days. The Marrakech nights before the tour can be added to your quote. If you would rather have more time in the desert, the 7-day tour from Marrakech starting on 28 December also puts you in camp on New Year's Eve.
What about New Year in other Moroccan cities?
Marrakech has the widest choice of New Year evenings in Morocco. Elsewhere the night is quieter and again mostly marked in hotels and restaurants.
| City | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Essaouira | Calm and mild, with dinners in riads and restaurants. Good if you want a low-key night |
| Fes | Quieter and more traditional, with fewer licensed venues and cold nights of about 3 to 6°C |
| Casablanca | A large modern city where hotels, restaurants and clubs hold events. A practical choice if you fly in or out there |
| Agadir | A beach resort where the large hotels usually hold their own New Year events. Mild nights by the sea |
