Morocco Itinerary for 7 Days: Marrakech, Atlas and Sahara

Seven days is enough for one region of Morocco done properly, or for a fast line across the country. This page sets out the week we recommend for a first visit, the distances involved, and two other routes for travellers who want cities more than sand.

What is the best 7-day route for a first trip?

A loop from Marrakech to the Sahara and back fits a week better than any other route. You fly in and out of the same airport, you see the city, the High Atlas, the kasbah country and the big dunes, and no single day is longer than about 370 km. It is the route of our 7-day Morocco tour from Marrakech, which Best Morocco Travel runs as a private trip.

What happens on each day?

Days 1 and 2: Marrakech

The first two days are for the city. A driver meets you at Marrakech Menara Airport and takes you to your riad in the medina. The first afternoon is deliberately empty: most people want a shower, a rest and a short walk to Jemaa el-Fna as the food stalls set up.

Day 2 is a walking day with a local guide. The usual circuit takes in the Koutoubia Mosque from outside, the souks, the Saadian Tombs, the Bahia Palace and the Ben Youssef Madrasa. You finish in the afternoon, which leaves the evening free. Entrance fees are paid on the spot and are not part of the tour price.

Day 3: over the High Atlas to the Dades Valley

This is the first long road day, 342 km. The road climbs to the Tizi n'Tichka pass at about 2,260 metres, then drops to the dry southern side of the mountains. The main stop is Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified mud-brick village on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1987 and a regular film location. After lunch you pass Ouarzazate and the rose-growing valley around Kelaat M'Gouna before reaching the Dades Valley for the night.

Day 4: Todra Gorge and into the dunes

Day 4 is shorter, 255 km, and ends on a camel. The morning starts with the rock formations of the Dades Valley known as the Monkey Fingers, then the road runs east to Tinghir and Todra Gorge, where you can walk between the cliff walls. Lunch is usually in Erfoud. You reach Merzouga in the late afternoon, ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset and sleep in a desert camp.

Day 5: a full day at Merzouga

The fifth day has almost no driving, and it is the reason this route works. After sunrise and breakfast at camp you return to the village by camel or 4x4. The day covers a visit to a nearby village to hear Gnawa music and a stop at the abandoned mining settlement of Mfis. The second night is in a hotel at the edge of the dunes, with a proper bathroom after a night in camp.

Days 6 and 7: the Draa Valley and back to Marrakech

The return takes a different road, which is why the loop takes two days. Day 6 is the longest of the week at 367 km: west through Nkob, with its cluster of old kasbahs, then Agdz and the palm groves of the Draa Valley to Ouarzazate. Day 7 is 195 km back over the Tizi n'Tichka pass. There is time for a film studio visit in Ouarzazate if you want one, and you are in Marrakech by afternoon or early evening.

How much driving is there, honestly?

Four of the seven days are road days, and two of those are full days in the vehicle. That is the price of reaching the big dunes: Merzouga is roughly 560 km from Marrakech, and the operator puts the direct drive at 9 to 10 hours. This itinerary splits it over two days in each direction, with a rest day in between.

  • The roads are paved all the way. The mountain section is winding. Travellers prone to car sickness should sit in front and bring medication.
  • Stops are frequent. In a private vehicle you choose them, so a long day is broken into stretches of an hour or so.
  • A 3-day version exists and is much harder. The 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour covers a similar distance with a 553 km final day. If you have a week, use it.

What should you skip in a 7-day trip?

Skip anything that needs a second long detour. A week holds one big idea, and for most first-time visitors that is Marrakech plus the desert.

  • Chefchaouen. It is in the far north, a long day from Marrakech in each direction. It belongs in a 10-day itinerary.
  • Fes, if you also want the Marrakech loop. You can end in Fes instead of returning to Marrakech, but you cannot do both in seven days.
  • Essaouira as an overnight. It is about 180 to 190 km west of Marrakech. If you want the coast, add a day or take it as one of the day trips from Marrakech.
  • Casablanca as a stay. If you land there, visit the Hassan II Mosque and move on.
  • A one-night dash to Merzouga. Arriving at dusk and leaving after breakfast leaves almost no daylight in the dunes. With a week, stay two nights.

Alternative 1: seven days in the north, without the desert

If old cities interest you more than dunes, spend the week between the Atlantic coast and Fes. The drives are shorter, the days are spent on foot, and the route suits winter and high summer better than the Sahara does.

Alternative 2: Casablanca to Marrakech in seven days

You can cross the whole country in a week, from Casablanca through Fes and the desert to Marrakech, but it is a fast trip. It is our 8-day tour from Casablanca with the arrival night removed, so you need to land early on day 1.

Distances are from the operator's 8-day itinerary. This version has one night in the desert and almost no time in Marrakech.

Why choose it

  • You see Chefchaouen, Fes, the Sahara and the High Atlas in one trip
  • No backtracking: every day moves forward
  • Works with an open-jaw flight into Casablanca and out of Marrakech

Why think twice

  • Five road days out of seven, the longest 453 km
  • Only one night in the desert and no guided day in Marrakech
  • A delayed arrival flight on day 1 breaks the plan

If this is the trip you want, adding one day makes a large difference. See the full Morocco itinerary guide for how the routes compare at each length.

What does a 7-day private tour cost?

A 7-day private tour costs €1,700 to €3,800 per person, the same all year. The low end applies to larger groups in standard accommodation, the high end to solo travellers or luxury riads and camps. The price covers a private air-conditioned vehicle, an English- or Spanish-speaking driver, accommodation, breakfasts and the camel ride. The operator lists three dinners on this route, and your quote says which evenings they are. Lunches, drinks, entrance fees, tips and flights are extra. Details are on the Morocco tour cost page.

Questions people ask

Is 7 days enough for Morocco?

Seven days is enough for Marrakech, the High Atlas and the Sahara, or for the northern cities, but not comfortably for both. To add Fes and Chefchaouen to the desert without rushing, plan 10 days.

How long is the drive from Marrakech to the Sahara?

Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes are roughly 560 km from Marrakech, which the operator puts at 9 to 10 hours of direct driving. On this itinerary the journey is split over two days with a night in the Dades Valley.

Can I visit both Fes and Marrakech in 7 days?

Yes, on a one-way route. Start in one city, cross the desert and finish in the other, with about two nights in each city at most. A loop back to your starting city does not fit in a week.

How many nights should I spend in the desert?

Two nights at Merzouga is the better choice on a 7-day trip: one in a camp in the dunes and one in a hotel at their edge. One night works, but you arrive at sunset and leave after breakfast.

Should I start a 7-day trip in Marrakech or Casablanca?

Start in Marrakech if you want the desert loop, because it saves a day of driving. Start in Casablanca if your priority is Rabat, Chefchaouen and Fes.

Can the 7-day itinerary be changed?

Yes. Every tour is private, so the start and end city, pace, hotel level and number of desert nights can all be adjusted before you agree the itinerary.
