Marrakech to Merzouga: Distance, Routes and How to Get There

Merzouga is the village at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes, the part of the Sahara most travellers mean when they plan a desert trip from Marrakech. Getting there is a long journey over the High Atlas. This guide covers the distance, the roads, every way to make the trip and how many days to set aside.

How far is Merzouga from Marrakech

Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech by road, which is 9 to 10 hours behind the wheel before you add a single stop. The road is paved all the way, but it crosses the High Atlas on a slow, winding pass and then runs for hours across the open south-east of the country.

Distance
About 560 km one way
Driving time
9 to 10 hours without stops
Highest point

Minimum round trip
3 days, with one night in the dunes
From Fes instead
About 450 to 470 km, 7 to 8 hours of driving

Almost nobody drives it in one go. The usual pattern is a night in the Dades Valley, Merzouga the next afternoon, a camel ride to camp at sunset, then a return to Marrakech or onward to Fes.

The two main routes from Marrakech to the Sahara desert

There are two roads worth knowing: the northern route through Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge, and the southern route through Nkob and the Draa side of the Anti-Atlas. Both start by crossing the High Atlas on the Tizi n'Tichka pass and both meet again at Ouarzazate, so the real choice is which way you travel between Ouarzazate and the dunes.

Route 1: Tizi n'Tichka, Ouarzazate, Dades and Todra

This is the classic way out, used by every one of our Marrakech desert tours on at least one leg. It has the best known stops, from Ait Ben Haddou to Todra Gorge.

Route 2: Nkob and the Draa side

The southern road is quieter and is most often used for the return. It leaves Merzouga through Rissani, crosses a long, empty stretch of stony desert to Alnif and Nkob, a village with dozens of old kasbahs, and then follows the edge of the Draa Valley back towards Ouarzazate. It avoids repeating the gorges.

How to get from Marrakech to Merzouga: every option compared

You can reach Merzouga by private tour, shared minibus tour, public coach, rental car or a flight to Errachidia followed by a transfer. They differ far more in comfort and flexibility than in the distance you cover.

Shared tour prices are from 2026 marketplace listings. Coach and flight schedules change, so check with the operator before you plan around them.

Private tour with a driver

A private tour gives you your own air-conditioned vehicle and driver, with nobody else on board. You choose when to leave, where to stop and how long to stay, and the hotel, camp, dinners, breakfasts and camel ride are arranged for you. All of our desert tours work this way. Hassan and his team in Marrakech plan and run them, and the price per person falls as your group grows because the vehicle is shared only within your party.

Shared minibus tour

Shared tours sell seats on a minibus with other travellers, usually over three days with fixed stops and a fixed camp. They are the cheapest organised option and suit solo travellers who enjoy company. Our comparison of private and group tours goes into the trade-offs.

Public coach with Supratours or CTM

Supratours, the coach company linked to Morocco's national railway, runs a daytime service from Marrakech to Merzouga village. Recent timetables show a morning departure and an evening arrival, about 12 hours later, by way of Ouarzazate, Tinghir, Erfoud and Rissani. Supratours also runs an overnight coach from Fes. CTM serves towns along the route, including Ouarzazate and Errachidia, and its services on this side of the country mostly finish short of Merzouga, so you may need a grand taxi for the last stretch.

The coach is the cheapest way to cover the distance, but it only gets you to the village. You still need to book a camp, a camel ride and a way back. Timetables change by season and are not always published far ahead, so confirm times at the station or on the operator's website, and book a day or two early from October to April.

Self-drive in a rental car

Driving yourself is possible, since the road is paved all the way to Merzouga. Be honest with yourself about the conditions. The Tizi n'Tichka pass is a long run of hairpins shared with lorries and slow traffic, and snow can close or slow it in winter. Outside the towns the roads are mostly unlit, and the UK government's travel advice warns that road accidents are frequent and mountain roads are hazardous at night. Plan both days so you arrive before dark, fill up whenever you pass a fuel station on the long empty stretches, and do not try to drive a hire car into the dunes. Leave it at your hotel or camp office in Merzouga and go on by camel or 4x4.

Flying to Errachidia

The nearest airport to Merzouga is Errachidia (Moulay Ali Cherif, code ERH), roughly 130 km away, or about two hours by road. At the time of writing it has domestic flights, mainly from Casablanca with Royal Air Maroc, and listings also show flights from Marrakech and Rabat. There are only a handful each week and routes come and go, so check before you build a trip around one. Flying saves a long day in the car, but you skip the High Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou and the gorges.

Starting from Fes instead of Marrakech

Fes is closer to the dunes than Marrakech: about 450 to 470 km, or 7 to 8 hours of driving. The road crosses the Middle Atlas through Ifrane and the cedar forest near Azrou, where Barbary macaques live, then drops through Midelt and the date palms of the Ziz Valley to Erfoud and Merzouga.

Many travellers use the desert as the link between the two cities. You can start in Marrakech and finish in Fes on the 3-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour, or start in Fes and finish in Marrakech on the 4-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour, whose first day is about 477 km with stops in Ifrane and the cedar forest. Either way you never drive the same road twice.

How many days you need for Merzouga from Marrakech

Three days is the minimum and four is more comfortable. A three-day loop gives you one night in the dunes but ends with a single return day of about 553 km. Each extra day goes into shorter drives or more time at the dunes.

The best stops on the way

A few stops are worth protecting even on a short schedule. In order from Marrakech:

  1. Tizi n'Tichka pass. The climb out of Marrakech through Amazigh (Berber) villages to the highest main road pass in Morocco.
  2. Telouet Kasbah. The partly ruined palace of the Glaoui family, on a side road just past the pass. It fits on the 4 and 5 day tours.
  3. Ait Ben Haddou. The best known stop on the route. Allow at least an hour to cross the river and climb to the granary at the top.
  4. Ouarzazate. Film studios and Taourirt Kasbah, best seen on a tour that sleeps here.
  5. Dades Valley. Red rock formations, including the rounded cliffs called the Monkey Fingers, and the usual first night.
  6. Todra Gorge. A short, flat walk between high walls, cool even in summer.
  7. Rissani and Nkob. The market town of the Tafilalet oasis, and the kasbah village on the southern road home.

What happens when you arrive in Merzouga

You arrive in the afternoon, leave your main luggage with the vehicle, and ride a camel into the dunes for roughly an hour, timed so you reach camp around sunset. Pack a small overnight bag with a warm layer, a torch and a power bank. If you would rather not ride, most camps can also be reached by 4x4.

At camp you have dinner, usually followed by drumming around a fire, and a night sky with almost no artificial light. Camps come in standard, comfort and luxury levels. The main difference is the bathroom: in a standard camp you may share one, and in a luxury camp it is part of your tent. Our guide to luxury desert camps in Merzouga explains what each level includes. Most people climb a dune for sunrise before breakfast and the ride back to the road.

When to go

October to April is the comfortable season for the drive and the dunes. Days are warm and clear, but desert nights from November to March can drop close to freezing, so bring a proper jacket. Snow on the High Atlas can slow the Tizi n'Tichka pass in winter.

Spring and autumn are the busiest months, and good camps fill early around holidays. In July and August afternoons at Merzouga often pass 40°C, so camel rides happen only at sunset and sunrise. The month-by-month detail is in our guide to the best time to visit Morocco.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Trying to do it in two days. A two-day trip means about 560 km each way with almost no time at the dunes. If you only have one or two days, look at a closer desert instead.
  • Looping back when you are heading north anyway. If Fes is next on your trip, a one-way route saves the 553 km return to Marrakech.
  • Booking a flight home on the evening you get back. The return day can run late. Book a late flight or stay one more night in Marrakech.
  • Driving after dark. With a hire car or a driver, plan arrival times so the mountain and desert roads are driven in daylight.
  • Packing for the heat only. Even in spring the camp is cold at night. Bring layers, closed shoes and a scarf for sun and sand.
  • Taking the coach without booking the camp. The bus stops in the village, not at a camp. Arrange the camel ride and the night in advance.

Erg Chebbi or a closer desert

If you want tall sand dunes, Erg Chebbi at Merzouga is the place, and nothing closer to Marrakech replaces it. The alternatives are shorter trips with different scenery.

  • Agafay Desert. A stony plateau about 40 km from Marrakech, with camps and camel rides but no sand dunes. It works as a day trip or one night. See day trips from Marrakech.
  • Zagora. A Draa Valley town about 360 km from Marrakech. The dunes near it are small, and 2-day tours sold as Sahara trips usually go here, not to Merzouga.
  • Erg Chigaga. A larger, quieter dune field beyond M'Hamid, reached by about 60 km of off-road driving in a 4x4. Read Erg Chebbi vs Erg Chigaga to compare the two.

Questions people ask

How long does it take to get from Marrakech to Merzouga?

About 9 to 10 hours of driving for roughly 560 km, before stops. Tours split it over two days with a night in the Dades Valley, and the public coach takes about 12 hours in one day.

Is there a direct bus from Marrakech to Merzouga?

Supratours runs a daytime coach that ends in Merzouga village, taking about 12 hours. Check the current timetable before you travel, because times change by season, and remember you still need to book a camp.

Can you visit Merzouga as a day trip from Marrakech?

No. At 9 to 10 hours of driving each way, a day trip is not realistic. For one day, the Agafay Desert near Marrakech is the practical alternative, though it has no sand dunes.

What is the nearest airport to Merzouga?

Errachidia (Moulay Ali Cherif), roughly 130 km away. It has a few domestic flights a week, mainly from Casablanca, so check schedules before you plan around it.

Is it safe to drive yourself from Marrakech to Merzouga?

The road is paved throughout and many visitors drive it. The risks are the bends on the Tizi n'Tichka pass and unlit roads, so drive only in daylight and allow two days.

How much is a private Marrakech to Merzouga tour?

With us a private 3-day tour costs €500 to €800 per person, a 4-day tour €600 to €900 and a 5-day tour €700 to €1,000. Group size and camp level set where you fall in the range.

Is Merzouga closer to Fes or Marrakech?

Fes. Merzouga is about 450 to 470 km from Fes and about 560 km from Marrakech, which is why many travellers start in one city and finish in the other.
